I'm writing from Birmingham. Interesting you grew up in Kings Norton, have quite a few family members there from that side of the family. My mary-ann was born 1871, her father was Walter Halfpenny (not sure when he was born) and Olive Halfpenny, nee crump, born 1841. Walter was a cabinetmaker and later a hairdresser. he disowned mary-ann (known as Polly) when she married a working-class, illiterate orphan called William Bryan in 1894.
