Bruce,
I may have your connection. When my gr. grandfather, Sebastian Hamberger (a son of Bartholomew Hamberger), d. in Utica NY in 1905, among his children were George J. “of Ohio” and Frank “of Illinois” (obit), also a brother, Gustave, “of Lancaster, O”.When Sebastians wife d. in 1915, George was apparently back in Utica and his bro. Frank was of Wonkeegan, Ill.
While any of these could be your ancestor, George J. Hamberger was b. 1873 and d. 1928 (gravestone). He would be abt. 22/3 yrs old when your grandfather was b. in 1895.It looks like this George returned to Utica between 1905 and 1915.Staunch Catholics, this family belonged to St. Joseph’s (German) Church and are buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery.Sebastian Hamberger’s sister, Frances, was the mother of Father Albert Regensberger who served at St. Joseph’s church.
Beside Ohio and Ill, some of this family was also in Buffalo, NY about the turn of the century.
Sebastian came here as a child with his parents and siblings from Landau, Bavaria (obit of Frances (Hamberger) Regensberger).
While I can’t verify a connection, you may be able to find some census info which might make a connection to NY, the obit of George who d. in Utica in 1928 could also be a key but I don’t have a date in 1928 for a look-up.
