Re: William Hamilton - 1880 Salem County, NJ Census
While the ages are off from census to census, (and the 1900 census is quite messed up) I think the William and Mary Hamilton in Lower Penns Neck, Salem Co, NJ in 1880, 1900 and 1910 with sons Frank, Burdell (Bird, Mechor B.) and Albert are all the same couple.
The above William lists either NJ or Delaware as his place of birth in each census. In none of them does he say he was born in Scotland. This William and Mary were still alive as late as 1910, when Frank would have been in his 30s.He has at least two siblings, so not an only child.Either your family story is wrong, or this is the wrong Frank HAMILTON.
What information about your grandfather Frank do you have confirmed? Do you know from either a birth record or death record that his parents were named William and Mary?Do you know that he was from Salem County?
I looked at your user history and saw your post from 2008 about Frank, which gives his birthdate as 5-July-1876.There is a WWI draft registration card for a Frank Patrick HAMILTON born on that date who registered in Miami, Dade Co, FL.Is this your Frank? His nearest relative is listed as Hilda Garde HAMILTON, same address. Is this your grandmother?
The 1900 census has a Corporal Frank P. HAMILTON b. July 1876 in NJ, single, father b. unk, mother b. NJ, stationed at Fort Columbus, NY.
Though the age is off by 6 years, there's a Frank P. HAMILTON, age 28, b. NJ, wife Hilda, age 28, b. Ireland and sons Francis and Walter in Phildelphia.
This family is in Miami, FL in 1920, having added a son named Carl to the family.
In 1930 they are in Santa Monica, CA.
Sorry, just saw his findagrave listing which confirms much of the above from 1900 on.I think the question is still how do you know the family in Lower Penns Neck, Salem, NJ in the 1880 census is the Frank you are looking for?
