Isador Hammersmith
GORHAM - Isador A. Hammersmith, 78, died Thursday, April 25, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays. He was born Jan. 8, 1913, at Gorham, to Anton and Anna Barbara (Schmidtberger) Hammersmith. He married Agnes Sander Aug. 18, 1936, at Gorham. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham, and was a lifetime area resident. He moved to a farm south of Gorham in 1947, then retiredin 1975 and moved to Gorham. He also worked in the oil field s for 12 years for Tony Witt and was a carpenter for Windholz Construction, Victoria. Survivors include his wife, Agatha, of the home: a son, Marvin Hortin, daughters, Katie Bellindir, Victoria, and Mary Lou Wherry, LaCrosse; a brother, Leo, Lansing; two sisters, Bridget Graf, Woodston, and Katie Dauwe, Plainville; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was proceded in death by sisx brothers, Albert, Herb, Clarence, Alfonse, Eugene and Celestine, and one sister, Sarah Armes. Service is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham, with Father Didacus Dunn officiating; burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Gorham. A parish vigl will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the mortuary. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of St. Anthony's Hays. William J. Befort, 83, 2502 Sherman, died Wednesday Nov. 22, 2000, at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Hyacinth to John C. and Barbara (Steinbach) Befort. He was a farmer, did custom wheat harvesting and worked in the custodial department at Fort Hays State University for 16 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Hays. Survivors include a brother, Aloysius, Grand Island, Neb., five sisters, Josephine Pfeifer and Jane Gottschalk, both of Hays and Agnes England, Esther Stals and Bernice England, all of New Bedford, Mass. He was proceded in death by five brothers, Alex, Connie, Francis, Clarence and John and three sisters, Albina Pfeifer, Irene Wilson, and Elizabeth Befort. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Father Don Zimmerman officiating, burial in the St. Jospeh Cemetery, Hays. A parish virgil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials aare suggested to the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home in Hays. Clarence J. Befort, 75, formerly of 415 E. 15th, died Sunday, June 16, at the Wheatland Nursing HOme, Russell, where he had been a resident for two months. He was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Munjor, to John C. and Barbara (Steinbeck) Befort. He was a retired laborer and tree trimmer and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include two brothers, William J., Hays, and Alois, Grand Island, Neb., and five sisters, Josephine Pfeifer, Hays, Jane Gottschalk, LaCrosse, and Agnes England, Ester Stals and Bernice England, all of New Bedford, Mass. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Paulinus Karlin officiating, burial in the church cemetery. A parish virgil service is scheduled for 8 tonight at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine. Visitation is scheduled until 9 tonight and from 8 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. 6/16/1991 8/4/1915 WILSON - Silverina Hammersmith, 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, aat Veterans Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. She was born Feb. 24, 1913, at Emmeram to Martin and Agnes Quint. She moved to victoria with her parents at an early age. She married Alfonse Hammersmith July 28, 1930, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham; he proceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She moved to Wilson, in October 1963 and had lived there until her death. Survivors include a son, Al, Elinwood; two daughters, Virginia Rathbun, Natoma, and Darlene Mattas, Wilson; and 10 grandshildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, two sons, two brothers and five sisters. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Gorham, with Father Gregory Beyer officating; burial in the church cemetery, Gorham. A rosary is scheduled for 8 tonight at Cline-Pickens Funeral Home, Russell.
