According to a family historian, my wife's Hammill ancestor came from Cornwall, England in the 1830's.According to the information, John and William Hammill were miners who immigrated to Canada and then to NY, cir 1830, where William went west (later resided in California) and John moved to Guilford Co. NC where there were already some other Hammill's living (relationship unknown).John married in Guilford Co. NC and moved around following the mining in NC and SC. Most of the family remained in NC and many descendantssettled in an area of NC near the gold mining town of Gold Hill in Rowan Co. NC. I know, according to other records and gravestones, that there were many miners in Gold Hill from Cornwall. John was born cir 1812 and died in 1886. One of his children, Dick, did not die until 1956 and it was from him that most of the info on John was obtained. No one has done any work to trace John back to England and any info would be greatly appreciated.
