Re: Laura Ann Hammit - Erath County, Texas
Wish I could provide you with more information, but this is all I have.Laura's father was John Franklin Hammit. He was the youngest born to James and Mary M. Hammit. They had seven children:
(1)William R. - born 1842 in Mississippi
(2)Elizabeth C. - born 1845 in Arkansas
(3)Thomas A. - born 1847 in Arkansas
(4)James K. Polk - born April 18, 1848 in Arkansas
(5)Mary J. - born 1854 in Arkansas
(6)Elisha D. - born 1857 in Texas
(7)John Franklin - born April 1, 1860 in Texas.
James Hammit, his wife Mary, and their seven children are found on page 504 of the Cherokee County, Texas census of 1860.James, Mary, and their sons James K. Polk and John Franklin and his wife Dora Hogan are all buried in the Purves Live Oak Cemetery, Erath County, Texas.Laura's siblings were Henry, Chesley, William, Robert Franklin, Viola, and Sabra.Do you know if the Luke Caudle who married Irene Hammit had any connection with the Caudles who were related to the Gilbreaths of Erath County, Texas? My great grandfather was John Chesley Gilbreath, who was a sheriff of Erath County in the 1880's.One of his deputies was a Caudle. The Hammits have been a mystery to me.I have seen their name spelled several ways.On John Franklin's death certificate it is spelled Hammit. On his tombstone it is spelled Hammitt.Hope this information helps.I am only able to do genealogy on the weekends because of all the overtime I have to work.If I were retired, I would do it all the time.Take care and hope to hear from you soon.
