Re: William Hanaghan and Mary Whalen
The spelling in here is a little different, but the closest I've found yet on these forum pages, and it must be the same name or a dirivitive of... my own maiden name...
HENAHAN, ORIG SPELLING: HENAGHAN.
This name comes from only one region of Ireland:COUNTY MAYO.
Our family names on my father's side are...
HENAHAN (HENAGHAN...PLUS MANY SPELLINGS)...
CONWAY, LALLEY, BURKE, SHAW, JOYCE, DEVENEY,
DEVEREAUX, GAVIN, COSTELLO, KINSELLA... ALL FROM MAYO.
MAINLY... CASTLEBAR, WESTPORT, LOUISBURGH
AREAS OF MAYO.
My Grandfather, Martin Henahan (Henaghan), dropped the "g" because Americans were mispronouncing it with a hard, instead of soft "g".
Martin Henahan's mother was Mary Conway, from the Castlebar, Mayo area.
Martin Henahan married Norah Gibbons, of Tourmakeady (also Partry area) of Mayo, Ire.
If you do searches of the various spellings of this name... Hanaghan, Hanahan, Hanigan, Hannigan, Henahan, Henaghan, Henehen, Heneghan, and so forth... You will find info.. Esp linked to the above mentioned other surnames, and always in County Mayo.
Try the link... Tourmakeady.com... you will find a bit of Henaghans, etc... in there.
Hope this helps...
