Hi, Carol.I am also researching Capt John Handley's family. My line is his sister Mary, who married (1) Alexander Douglass and (2)Capt George Little, and her daughter Betsy Douglass who married His son Jonas Little.I'm not too far along in getting documents to verify info found in Kentucky Family Records (I have v 1-12 and there are more), but this is part of what I have found so far:
v. IX, pp 23-26.Revolutionary soldiers that lived in Daviess Co KY: John Handley, b 1755.Served as Capt - VA.Married: Rachel _____.Surveyor.Prominent land promoter who opened up southern Daviess County to settlers.Died 1816.Probably buried in Van Meter Springs Cemetery (now) McLean County.[evidentally now headstones gone.I think DAR put up a marker there] Children: 1.George Handley.First Circuit Court Clerk of Daviess County (1815-1827). 2.Samuel Handley (1784-1862), married Betsy Robertson (1788-1868), dau of John Robertson RS and Mary Parker of Nelson Co KY.(Betsy Robertson and husband Saml Handley named in will of John Robertson, Nelson Co KY Will Book C) 3.Sally Handley (1785-1861)m 03 Mar 1809 Remus Griffith, s/o Joshua Griffith and Elizabeth Ridgely.
John Handley was in the part of Nelson Co that became Ohio County in 1798/99 [that became Daviess in 1815, and then McLean].His wife may be buried in Nelson County or Ohio Co.He is in early Daviess County tax rolls with a lot of land.
He had a brother George, a sister Rachel who m Anthony Thompson (RS), both buried in Van Meter Springs Cemetery [evidentally land donated by Thompson].A Samuel Handley d 1790 in Nelson County KY [Nelson Co Pioneer, gen newsletter] may also be a brother.
In v. 4, KY Family Records, "The Muhlenberg Settlers,1785" discussing Capt Henry Roth,... "Heads of families in Capt. Henry's band:...At Roanoke Settlement, Virginia the known pioneers joined the party:#62.Capt John Handley, friend of Capt Roth (Rhoads) from Virginia...."
There is a John Handley, Patriot that Wharton Chapter, Louisiana Society DAR marked a gravesite for [found in DAR Magazine], but it doesn't seem to be same John Handley.Their ad says he was b 1746, d 13 Jan 1811,.. just a few years earlier than ours tho.
Are you also researching Alexander Douglass?I would be happy to exchange info on Handleys, Douglass, Little and other related families, and look forward to hearing from you. -- Mary Ann Harding
