Hans, George b 1868 Independence, Iowa-'70 & '80 census please
My grandparents, 31 yr old George I. Hans and 16 yr old Angie Mae "Dollie" Lake were married in or near Council Bluff on 12 Dec 1899, I think. I would really like to know where George was living before the wedding in 1899.
Can George Hans be found in a 1870 & 1880 census ? His parents were Fred Henry Hans born in GER and Sarah (Waldren) born in Indiana or ENG. Was he married previously ? What was his occupation ? Where did he live ? We know where George’s parents and siblings were supposed to be, but I can’t find George during the '70 or'80,census.
George was born 25 Nov 1868 in Independence, Iowa. He had three older siblings: Fred Mahlon b 1861 in Bremer Co, Iowa;Rose Etta b 1863 in Chicago; Sarah Jane “Jennie” b 1866 in Chicago. In Dec 1863 Fred Henry Hans mustered into the Army at Fairbank in northeastern Iowa near Independence and then took his wife Sarah and first child (Fred Mahlon) from Bremer Co (?) to Chicago where he had two daughters born while in the 12th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. Fred, sp Sarah, Fred M., Rose and Sarah or Jennie returned to Bremer Co after Jennies birth. We don’t know the exact location of the farm or if George’s father (Fred Henry Hans) had moved. There is a town of Bremer in Bremer Co which is a little northeast of the town of Fairbank. Fairbank is very close to the intersection of four counties: Bremer, Lafayette, Blackhawk, and Buchanon. Fairbank is about halfway between the town of Bremer and Independence. Independence is in Buchanon Co, Iowa. If I had to guess which county George was in during 1870 as a two year old, I would say Bremer and then Blackhawk along or close to the Wapsipinicon River.
By 1880, George would be 12 yrs old and have four more siblings: William would be 6 yrs old as he was born in 1871 in Independence, IO; The three youngest children of Fred and Sarah were John Lewis (’74 in Omaha), Eldora (’76 in Fremont-lived less than a year), and Edith Mayo born in 1878 also in Fremont. I think these last three children were all born while their parents were living on a farm near Fontanelle, Fremont and Blair in Washington Co, NE just north of Omaha, but I have never seen anything in black and white with George’s name on it or the census. George’s little brother John Lewis Hans is kidnapped at age two and not seen again for eighteen years. Eldora lives less than a year. By 1880, the two oldest children, Fred Mahlon is a scout for the army and Rose Etta is married to Leander Ed. Lawrence. So by the 1880 census we are looking for Fred Henry Hans, his spouse Sarah, 14 yr old Sarah or Jennie, (George) my grandfather to be, 6 yr old William, and two yr old Edith Mayo Hans somewhere near Independence, Iowa.
I would really like to see any census data, marriage license, or obits for any of Fred Henry Hans children, but I guess that’s another story.
By 1890, George would be 22 yrs old, but where is he ? Is he married ? Meanwhile his father Fred Henry Hans has died and his mother now lives on a homestead near Crawford and Ft Robinson, NE. It is also unknown were the youngest child, twelve yr old Edith Mayo is at this time (1890).
Thanks so much for your valuable and appreciated assistance.
