John Brown Trefethen Hanscom was the son of Rear Admiral JOHN FORSYTHE HANSCOM (1842-1912) and the grandson of Capt. SAMUEL HANSCOM (1804-1853).Capt. Samuel is one of the more famous members of the family.He operated the Hanscom Shipyard at Greenacre, Eliot, Maine, and, around 1850, he constructed the "Nightingale" -- the fastest and most elegant clipper ship ever built.
Capt. Samuel was married to his cousin, ELIZABETH SHAPLEIGH (1801-1852), d/o James and Anna (HANSCOM) Shapleigh.John Forsythe Hanscom was the youngest of their eight children.
JOHN FORSYTHE HANSCOM, b. Eliot, 21 April 1842, enlisted in the Civil War on 10 Sept. 1862 as a private in Co. G, 27th Maine.Following the War, he was employed as a ship carpenter, eventually working his way up to Naval Constructor.He was later promoted to the position of Rear Admiral.
He primarily resided in Philadelphia and Boston.He died in Philadelphia, 30 Sept. 1912, age 70.
