HARDEMAN spelling German??

My family has always gone by the spelling of HARDMAN.But, my ggrandfather told us the name was spelled HARDEMAN in German and he spoke some German.Can anyone tell me which spelling is correct to use for finding earlyancestors?These people lived in Columbus, Muscogee Co.,GA ca 1850-1900.Any info will be greatly appreciated.Thanks
