You are correct, so far as I my research goes. Mary was 13 when Hanora was born and I find no marriage to a Hardin, even though there is a Holtsberry genealogy posted which says that she was first married to "Mr. Hardin". As you know, there was no 1890 census, so the next time I find Mary E. and Jonas Haller is in the 1900 census of Cove District taken June 9, 1900. It shows Jonas, a farmer, born November 1855, age 44, and Mary E. born July 1860, age 39, both married 22 years. Mary E. had 6 children, 5 living. The rest of the family listed at home are: Stella W., daughter, forn February 1882, age 18; Dellia G., daughter, born March 1884, age 16; Nellie B. (my cousin says that she went by Blanche and was "not bright"), born August 1886, age 13; Altha B., son, born Dec. 1889, age 11; and Roy B., son, born August 1889, age 2 (also said to be "not bright," owing to the fact that Mary E. and Jonas were first cousins). Since there were five children living with the family at that time, can we conclude that Hanora was dead by 1900, or that Mary E. does not consider her part of the family because she has left home and perhaps married?
Where do you find the lone Hanora? It certainly is an unusual name, so there shouldn't be too many in the state. However, that's what I thought about another ancestor named Columbia Smith/Schmidt. I knew that tracing Smith was next to impossible, but couldn't imagine there would be many Columbias. Was I wrong! There were at least 20 in the state at the same time.
All of the Nestor children (Mary E. was the oldest)were married in the United Brethren Church where all were members of the choir at one time or another. I can find no record of the marriage, or for her younger sister, my grandmother, for that matter, who married the U.B. preacher, Rev. Millard Fillmore Pritchard, after his first wife died. I know that they were married by one of his friends, also a minister, so perhaps it was in a Methodist Church because he later joined the West Virginia Methodist Conference. The family records only say they were married in Barbour County. I do not know whether or not the church still exists in Nestorville, but have contacted the United Brethren archives and hope they have those early records.
In looking at the 1900 census for Cove District, I see another interesting entry. Charles Nestor, born September 1860,age 41, and wife Hettie A., born October 1865, age 34, were married ten years and had six children, all six living. None of the six children, however, are listed in the census, but living in the same household is Dakota Hardin, step-daughter, born August 1885, age 14, at school. Curiouser and curiouser! Any ideas where Dakota came from?
Best regards,
Emily Cary
