Re: Wabasha,MN county civil war veterans
Hi Stephen and others here. I posted this to another researcher also on this board who had Harley's originally in Bosotn, MA.
I am researching later back in time than your Harley's, but am looking for 2 Harley marriages in Boston., in particular one that married into my Smallidge surname and then my Sargents in Boston, MA in the later 1700's.
Please look at the chart below, Might this Harley be a descendant of Joseph and Martha (Smallidge) Harley of earlier Boston, MA?
My Sargent's aka Sergeant/Sergent's were in central NY by 1800 from Boston.. It appears(only appears) that their parent's died and they stayed and lived with an Uncle, Joseph Harley until they were grown Men and then migrated to NY by about 1798.(this is traditionally spoke of by ancestors that lived back then and knew Thomas and his brother Samuel Sergeant.) If you look at a chart below, it shows a Joseph, son of Joseph and Martha Smallidge, that perhaps married a cousin(I am thinking she was a cousin anyway.) Deborah Samllidge/Smalledge was a sister of my 5th great grandmother Bethany Smallidge. I think both parents of the Sergeant men were dead by about 1790, so it is almost certain that the Uncle Joseph they talk about was Joseph Harley, since Deborah was a sister to Bethany. He was probably affiliated with Ship building or seafaring in some way. I have that Joseph Harley, owned a boat and the two boys when were young sailed back and forth to his mother country that could have been Ireland or England. The Smalliedges were ship builders. Ireland is mentioned quite often in our family anyway, along with England. So I believe there are both Irish and English in our earlier DNA.
Also the name HARLEY was repeated named to many of our Sargent men later in the 1800's.
Hopefully there will be some sort of a connection here, There were not many Harley's in Boston earlier I have found.
