a subtitle for this post is-----why did our Charles harris/ jane cannon name their youngest son, green berry harris, who married permelia ann Elizabeth adair ca 1848 there in Paulding co, ga, after green berry turner, sr?
per laurens co, sc records i have already posted, our charles harris/ jane cannon witnessed the 1807 laurens co, sc deed re john pinson to his son, thomas pinson and who, again, was the same john pinson, whose will was witnessed and proven by both our robert carter, sr and our robert carter, jr there in 1811 in laurens co, sc.
again, our robert carter, jr/ 1st wife, unknown, and who stated, per a voter's registration poll in 1865 in paulding co, ga, that he was born on june 15, 1780 in laurens co, sc, was the father of our elizabeth carter who married our archibald harris, son of our Charles harris/ jane cannon, ca 1827 there in laurens co, sc and her brother, our james t carter, sr, who married lucinda harris, daughter also of our our charles harris/ jane cannon ca 1834 there in cobb co, ga and----
it is definitely important that our charles harris/ jane cannon knew our carter family there in laurens co, sc and moved with them from laurens co, sc on into cobb/ paulding cos, ga-----
but the fact that our charles harris/ jane cannon named their youngest son, green berry harris after green berry turner, sr would have nothing to do with our carter family.
again, green berry, sr, who was the son of thomas turner/ unicy collins, married margaret hopkins, daughter of solomon hopkins, jr/ elizabeth terry, who, again, like our charles harris/ jane cannon and our robert carter, jr/ 1st wife, unknown, were all there in laurens co, sc.
again, i have also cited the laurens co, sc deed that shows that solomon hopkins, sr had land there in laurens co, sc which bordered on john miller, who married as his 1st wife, sarah mary anderson, who was the daughter of our related james anderson/ margaret rodgers, sister of our john rodgers, sr/ esq/ margaret mcnees, who were the parents of our frances rodgers harris, mother of our charles harris/ jane cannon.
then, i also cited info, again, from the laurens co, sc records book 1785-1820 that shows that in 1814, our charles harris/ jane cannon and his cousin james young, jr, and whose father, james young, sr married ann anderson, also a daughter of our related james anderson, sr/ margaret rodgers, had appraised the estate of this same john miller.
what i am going to talk about here will not actually give the reason of why our charles harris/ jane cannon named their youngest son, green berry harris/ permelia adair after green berry turner, sr-----
but our charles harris'/ jane cannon and his father, our william harris, jr's/ frances rodgers' connections with the hopkins and terry families and/ or those also associated with them there in laurens co, sc are more involved and it is these connections and what this may or does entail that I am going to talk about here and to follow per subsequent posts.
first, per the 1850 census for paulding co, ga, our green berry harris/ permelia elizabeth ann adair was listed page/ dwelling 100, 951st District, Paulding Co, Ga and adjacent or near Ezekiel Carter, also page/ dwelling 100, 951st District, Paulding Co, GA and Ezekiel Carter was one of the sons of our Robert Carter, Jr/ his 2nd wife, sarah mcdaniel.
again, i have shown that our robert carter, jr/ sarah mc daniel and our jane cannon harris were baptists but there is info that shows that our harris family there in laurens co, sc were probably methodists and------
it is these connections re the terry family, as well as peter ragsdale and mark moore, and who info shows were all associated with the same lebanon methodist church there in laurens/ greenville cos, sc that, again, may have bearing on why our charles harris/ jane cannon named their youngest son, green berry harris after green berry turner, sr/ margaret hopkins, who was the daughter of solomon hopkins, jr/ elizabeth terry, daughter of rev thomas terry and his 1st wife, elizabeth harrison.
about 20 years ago, or longer, when i ordered the laurens co, sc records book 1785-1820 from miss sara nash, who compiled the book, i later noted that she had in the index that our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers was a methodist minister there in laurens co, sc.
at the time i was still trying to learn more period about our harris and carter families and so, i did not ask sara nash why she had methodistminister by the name of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and by the time Iremembered and/ or had an opportunity to ask this, sara nash was deceased.
again, mark moore was one of the executors of our william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will and, again, i have already talked about and cited in previous posts that mark moore and the ragsdale family were very involved there in Lunenburg/ Mecklenburg co, va with both our William harris, sr/ frances goode and his father, our William harris/ Judith Hudson and that, again, both mark moore and peter ragsdale had also moved to laurens co, sc---
and the info which says that, like rev Thomas terry, that both mark moore and peter ragsdale were also instrumental in establishing the Lebanon Methodist church there in laurens/ Greenville co, sc can be found on a rootsweb site by john gillion, entry #11931.
first, this is from a file on the terry family by the noted and earlier south carolina genealogist, leonardo andrea and on a site on line entitled: terry family historian.
note pg 95, page 14:thomas terry by his 2nd wife rebecca mcdowell had thomas terry, jr; john terry; mary terry who married john anderson......thomas terry built lebanon methodist church---taken from files on the anderson family.
I do not see on the rootsweb sites that the john Anderson, who married mary terry, was related to our james Anderson/ Margaret Rodgers but except for Elaine blackman, who I also cite later re these connections, none of these seem to know that mary terry was the daughter of rev Thomas terry and his 2nd wife, Rebecca McDowell while, again, his 1st wife, Elizabeth Harrison, was the mother of Elizabeth terry who married Solomon Hopkins, jr and who were the parents of Margaret Hopkins who married green berry turner, sr.
this was also rev thomas terry and his 2nd wife, rebecca mc dowell'sson, asbury terry, who married as his 1st wife, nancy graydon and 2nd her sister, winnifred graydon, daughters of thomas graydon/ sarah camp and-----
again, here is the laurens co, sc deed showing that john miller's land was adjacent both solomon hopkins, sr and thomas graydon, who, again, both inter-married with the family of this same revthomas terry.
SOLOMON HOPKINS bought land from Tully CHOICE - 387 acres for 125 pounds in upper Laurens County, bounded by lands of Samuel BOLLING, Thomas GRAYDON, John MILLER, lands unknown, Thomas MATTHEWS, James McKnight, being part of land originally granted to Tully CHOICE, December 5, 1785.

here, again, is info from the rootsweb site by john gillion talking about peter ragsdale and mark moore and their connections also with this same lebanon methodist church there in laurens/ greenville co, sc.
again, I will not repeat here just how involved both peter ragsdale and his ragsdale family and, of course, his brother-in-law, mark moore, werewith both our william harris/ judith hudson and their son, our william harris, sr/ frances goode also there in lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va but, again, mark moore was one of the executors of our william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will and i have considered the ragsdales to be a key family re our harris family from the time i began research on our harris family 30 years or so ago there in Paulding co, ga.
Ilearned almost from the outset that this was peter ragdale's son, elijah ragsdale who had also moved to paulding co, ga and who was involved there with our james harris/ anne cooper, son of our Archibald harris/ Elizabeth carter.
levi cooper, brother of our anne cooper harris, married emily ragsdale, daughter of joseph ragsdale/ lucinda carter, who I learned was not related to our carter family, but joseph ragsdale was a son of Elijah ragsdale/ mary kennedy, who, again, was a son of peter ragsdale/ sarah Charlton and, again, brother-in-law of mark moore who married his sister Rachel ragsdale-----
and who, again, were not just involved with our William harris, sr/ frances goode and his father, our William harris/ Judith hudson there in this same bluestone creek area of Lunenburg/ Mecklenburg co, va and, again, also with our William harris, jr/ frances Rodgers and their son, our Charles harris/ jane cannon there in laurens co, sc but, again, were still the same ragdale family involved with our james harris/ anne cooper and our same and related families also there in Paulding co, ga.
you can also see on line that elijah k ragsdale married sallie elizabeth allen, daughter of our s. n. allen in 1873 there in paulding co,ga and she was the sister of our amanda allen, who married our martin alonzo harris, son of our james harris/ anne cooper, there in 1874 in paulding co, ga.
elijah k ragsdale was the son of sanders walker ragsdale and he was the brother of joseph ragsdale/ Lucinda carter and also son of elijah ragsdale/ mary kennedy, again, son of peter ragsdale, who, again, had moved from lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va with his brother-in-law, mark moore, to laurens co, sc.
the info that elijah k ragsdale married sarah elizabeth allen, daughter of our s. n. allen, can be found on the site: chapter IV: sanders walker ragsdale-ragsdale family.
so, you can see that there are a lot of connections re this same ragsdale family, and specifically re the family of peter ragsdale, who were still involved with and who inter-married with my/ our related harris families, etc, also there in Paulding co, ga.
to return to the laurens co, sc records and as shown below, edmond learwood sold land to mark moore in laurens co, sc and this deed was witnessed by peter ragsdale and joel burgess and i am going to cite the laurens co, sc deed, to follow, that shows that this was joel burgess' son, elijah burgess who also witnessed the laurens co, sc deed re our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers to john cunningham.
again, this info re peter ragsdale and mark moore is from a rootsweb site by john gillion.
Peter (4) Ragsdale moved his family from Bluestone Creek area of Mechlenburg County, Virginia to take up residence on this 194 acres in South Carolina between 1784 and 1788. The date of the establishment of Lebanon M. E. Church by Peter (4) Ragsdale and Mark Moore is estimated by that church body as 1787. The tomb of Peter (4)'s son, Edmund (5) Ragsdale, in Lebanon M. E. Churchyard in Greenville, S. C., says the date of removal to South Carolina was 1788.
Tax lists in Mechlenburg County, Virginia, , in 1782 show Peter (4) Ragsdale with 9 white people in his family viz: self, wife, and 7 children. The .1790 U. S. Census of Greenville Co., South Carolina, shows Peter Wragsdale with 8 white people in his family, viz: self, wife, 2 sons born before 1774. 3 sons born before 1790, 1 daughter. The difference in number of children in the two reports is explained by the fact that one daughter, Fannie (5) Ragsdale, had married John Ridgeway in 1787.
Accompanying Peter (4) Ragsdale from Virginia to South Carolina were his sister, Rachael (4), and her husband, Mark Moore, a Methodist preacher born in Bristol Parish, Prince George County in 1726. By the efforts of these two men a School and a "Methodist Preaching Stand" were established' on the border line between Laurens and Greenville Counties. This preaching stand was perhaps the earliest Methodist place of worship in upper South Carolina. It is now Lebanon M. E. Church, a thriving part of the South Carolina conference.
Peter (4) Ragsdale left no will, and part of the administration papers in Greenville County were lost. However, returns made Jan. 1, 1806, list "sail" of his property, and returns made Sept. 19, 1807, list five legatees who received payment of their parts of the proceeds of this sale. Francis Asbury Ragsdale and Elizabeth Ragsdale, wife of Abner Camp, were not of the five.

here is the laurens co, sc will of joel burgess showing that elijah burgess was his son and, again, to follow, is the laurens co, sc deed showing that this was joel burgess' son, Elijah burgess who witnessed the 1798 laurens co, sc deed wherein our William harris, jr/ frances Rodgers sold land to john Cunningham for land that had been a grant both to our William harris, sr/ frances Rodgers and his father, our Patrick Cunningham/ ann harris.
laurens will book C-1, page 32, 1803, will of joel burgess, legatees included his wife: ellen; sons: william; elijah; joel; walter; john; thomas; rowland burgess; daus: jenny; salley; nelly; betsy; and son-in-law, william wynn hendrick and his dau tabitha. exec: wife, ellen and sons, joel and rowland burgess. wit: ezekiel rowland; thomas babb; and william nelson.

still info from the rootsweb site by john gillion talking about peter ragsdale and mark moore establishing the Lebanon Methodist church there in laurens/ Greenville cos, sc.
Event: Charter Member Jan 1785 Laurens Co., South Carolina Note:
Lebanon Methodist stands in lower Greenville County near the "Ancient Boundary Line" of Gov. James Glen's 1755 treaty with the Cherokees, Here, in 1784 when Greenville County was formed from the Indian lands west of the boundary and opened for settlement, came a group of Virginia families--soldiers and patriots, women and men--who had shared the struggles of the Revolution in Virginia, Georgia and Carolina. As soon as they had roofs over their heads, the settlers acted to provide a church and school; their children had gone too long already without these necessities.
Peter Ragsdale was commissioned to return to Virginia to find someone qualified to preach and teach. Meanwhile, the settlers built a crude "pole chapel." This first meetinghouse, one and one quarter miles east of the present church building, was named The Grove. It was ready when Ragsdale returned with the Rev. Mark Moore, his brother-in-law. A Laurens County deed dated Jan. 28-29, 1785, recorded a purchase of land by the Rev. Mark Moore, confirms the beginning date of this grass roots organization.
again, i cannot say why our charles harris/ jane cannon named their youngest son, green berry harris,/ permelia adair after green berry turner, sr/ Margaret hopkins but, again, i do know it had nothing do do with our carter family but, again, it may-----
have had something to do with these Methodist connections that our William harris, jr/ frances Rodgers and our Charles harris/ jane cannon may have also had there in laurens co, sc with the turner/ hopkin/ terry families and which, again, as shown here also included peter ragsdale and mark moore and all of their connections to this same Lebanon Methodist church there in laurens/ Greenville cos, sc.
again, and also to repeat-----not only did our charles harris/ jane cannon name their youngest son, green berry harris after green berry turner, sr, but both our james harris/ anne cooper and his double aunt and uncle, our james t carter, sr/ lucinda harris, as well as the turner family, were buried in the old turner cemetery there in paulding co, ga and the land for the cemetery was given by and named for green berry turner, sr/ margaret hopkins.
the info re the old turner cemetery there in Paulding co, ga can be found on line.
