William Hartleben, Tonawanda, NY late 1800s
It is times like these that I wish I had taken better notes. There was a William Hartleben born in 8/1846 Prussia listed on the 1900 census files. In 1910, William was a grocer and in 1900 he was a landlord. In 1920, there was a boarder (with a person I didn't bother to write down...) in Tonawanda that was the correct age, born in Germany with the same name who was listed as coming over in 1857. The important part of this information is that Carl/Karl who later moved to Wisconsin to establish the Wisconsin Hartleben clan also arrived in the USA in 1857.
Question 1:Could they be related?
Question 2:Since Tonawanda is close to Hamburg, NY (30 miles according to Mapquest), could William be related to the "story" that is in my family that they moved from Hamburg to Hamburg.
It is important to note, there are only a very few Hartlebens listed in NY during the late 1800s and early 1900s. I would like to assume that they are all somehow related. But, I have no way of figuring this out.
Does anyone from the Wisconsin Hartlebens have information on when they arrived including ship registries?
Does anyone have any information on William that might link him to any of the various Hartleben groups out there?
