Re: Henry Hartless and Isabella ?
Hi Jo Ann,
I see you are working on the Hartless family.I am trying to find the children of Nathaniel and Patsey Hartless Cooper.I found one child he was Virgil and he married a Peters. They were in WV by 1870.
We have been trying to find a D Cooper who may have been a son of Patsey and Nathaniel Cooper. His wife ? was Edy Ann (Duff).Rumor is that a Duff man moved to Bear Mountain. He was a nice man to the Indians. One person said he had Edy by an Indian Lady.We have no proof. There is no marriage for a D Cooper in Amherst or Rockbridge County.
In the 1860 Amherst Co census...........................
Patsey Cooper 72
Jeremiah J 17
James H 15
Patsey J 14
Sarah C or S 7
By 1870 Amherst county census, Patsey is gone.Jeremiah has married Eliza Ann Beverly. They have two children.James and Sallie (Sarah).
In 1880 Jeremaih is in Rockbridge County and has changed his name to Duff.He used Duff from then on.
His brother James H Cooper married Mary Agnes Mason in 1867 in Rockbrisge Co.He married under Cooper. We think he changed his name the same Jeremaih did.James didn't show in any census until 1900 and 1910.We found a death record for James' wife Mary Mason. She was a widow when she died in 1914.There is nothing for James anywhere. We figure he died about 1910-1912.We had someone search the newspaper for obits in 1910.They found nothing on James or any other Duff.
The only reson we can think of for them to change thier name was because of the way Indians were treated in Amherst county during that time. They moved to Rockbridge to escape the awful way they were treated. It's just a guess.
It took a while to figure out that they had changed their names.I thought we would not have any problem tracing them after we found the real name of Cooper.
We cannot find Patsey or the children in the 1850 census in Amherst.I went through each page of the census and did not find them.Right now we are stuck again. The last daughter Sarah was born in 1853.Looks like Edy would have to be living in 1853.No Luck.
If you know of anything that would help, I would appreciate it.
