Ann,
I am actually very unhappy with my Hartney tree. Of
the eight I am researching, it is by far the shortest. How-
ever, here goes:
William Hartney b. May 1837 in Limerick m. Catherine
O'Keefe, b. 1838 in Ireland. I have his Citizenship papers
dated March 3, 1857.
Children were:
1. Catherine Hartney, b.3/3/1865,m. William Howe Grogan b.11/1857 in Nova Scotia. She died 6/29/1942.
2. Mary Hartney, b.12/6/1867, m. Larry Duffin b.9/9/1871. They were childless.
3.William Hartney b. 4/1869
That is basically it. Catherine "Kit" Hartney Grogan had seven children, the fourth of which was
Catherine "Cassie" Grogan Dwyer- my mother.
Now to the mystery of the Hartney lot at Calvary Cemetary where there are 13 bodies in an 8 grave lot.....
1, Estelle Grogan buried 5/29/1912.
She is my aunt killed in a freak childhood accident at age 14.
2. Fred Grogan buried 10/18/18.
He is my uncle died in the flu epidemic at
age 11.
3. Lawrence Duffin buried 7/26/34.
He is mentoned above-husband of Mary Hartney.
Age 62
4. Mary Hartney Duffin buried 10/5/34.
My grandmothers sister.
5.Charles Byrne buried 1/8/1895. Age one.
I have no idea who his parents were.
6. Catherine Hartney buried 10/27/1908.
I assume she is Catherine O'Keefe Hartney,
my ggrandmother.
7. William Hartney buried 4/7/1906.
I have no idea who he was, or how old he was.
My grandmother had a brother named William,
and one would assume this is he- but we don't KNOW.
8. William Hartney buried 11/21/1908.
My ggrandfather, age 71.
9. Catherine Heroux buried 1/29/1887.
Have NO idea who she is or how old.
10. Joseph Heroux buried 4/19/1887, age one.
One has to assume he is son of #9. Possible
she died in childbirth, and he lived on only a short time.
BUT- What's that got to do with the Hartneys?
11. Mary Hartney buried 1/14/1874. Age 14.
I have NO idea whose kid she was...
12. William Hartney buried 4/14/1869 age 11.
Haven't got a clue!
13. Qwen Hartney buried 4/14/1875.
Legend has it that he was a brother to my
ggrandfather, and a fireman, but I can't prove it.
Ann, I have a theory that there were a whole bunch of Hartneys immigrated to Chicago together, and
that William's cemetary lot became a "Potters Field" for
all and sundry. Note the totals- There are 6 children,
3 adults, and 4 age unknowns.
Does any of this square with your research?
One other note- later in life, William Hartney
acquired a two-flat at 706 W. 21st Pl. When his daughter
married William Howe Grogan, the newlyweds moved into one
of the flats. My mother was born there and attended St.
Pius V grammar school.
