I have re-read your message. It seems you don't know your grandmother had at least 8 siblings, the first 7 and she had been born in Stanley Co. before they moved to SC.
Ephriamwas the first born son of James Wesley and Nellie (Whitley) Hartsell, b. Dec. 3, 1846 in Big Lick Twp, Stanly Co. James Wesley is son of Jacob Hartsell, 7th son of John Hartsell b.1760 Pa. and Rosena Horlacher)who have parented all NC Hartsells. Born Nov.10th, 1794 on the farm his father had purchased for their family in (now) Cabarrus Co.in 1787 near the Stanly co. line.
there is a whole line here too much to go into on this page but I'm sure shows up all over it when you start searching for the children and children's children of JOHN Hartsell and Rosena Horlacher) John is one of four brothers born to Johann Leonhardt and Esther Leip (first ancestors to come to Pa in 1727)
Jonas, older brother to Jacob, is my paternal grandfather's grandfather and also grandfather to the relatives from Moore Co. where your ggrandfather lived before moving to SC as a pastor of the Hopewell Baptist church in Chesterfield Co. SC where he and his wife and family are all buried in the Hopewell cemetaryhere says he died May 24, 1928.
had also been a cobbler and a carpenter.
He married Rebecca Walters (b. Feb.26,1840..d.Dec.15, 1923)
Eprhaim had also lived in Moore Co..where we met some of your most immediate cousins at a family reunion for that branch of our Hartsell family.
The cousins were descended from our ggrandfather's brother, . they have a Baptist church there they have built themselves and were all quite "Baptist" (the whole clan) There were well over a hundred we met while they received us "long lost cousins" with open arms.
My guess is that the folks in Moore County will know lots about your family.
For the sake of any seeking similar info (considering there were 9 children of Ephraim and Rebecca)
your father's mother was born 7th of the 8 children born in Stanly Co. listed as 3y on the 1880 census.
Sarah Ellen b. 1867(m. Thomas Gaskin in Chesterfield)died
there in 1945, buried in New Hope Baptist cemetary)
Mary b. around 1869
Dora b. 1871
Safronia b. 1873 (twin) Hanna b. 1873
Catherine b 1875
Mattie b. 1876 (3y old 1880 Stanly census)
Lucey M. b. Nov 1879
Little Freddie b after 1880 died young..he is the only
child of Ephraim and Rebecca Hartsell born after they'd left Stanly and not listed on a census
Siblings of Ephraim are listed as:
Jacob "Little Jake" b. 1848
James Wesley Jr. b. 1850
Pearson Gamaliel b. 1852
Jonas "Jonah B." b. 1857
Dr. Jackson Hartsell, b. 1860
Brice Wellingtonb. 1868
and one sister Rosellar "Rose" b. 1885 to a second marriage (not sure of name here)
James Wesley Hartsell was first born to Jacob and Lucy (McCollum)of 13 children. Seems they were all hers.
You should most likely purchase a copy of our cousin Eunice Hartsell Sechler's work because you can find everything you are in need of in way of whatever research she has done in that book. It's filled with good stories about our ancestors and is well worth the investment. Her husband still had copies when I purchased mine several years ago so if he is still with us you may be able to reach him at the same number in charlotte NC
