Hassenplug to Hassen

Anyone have any information regarding the family shortening the name? My wife's father was Franklin Hassen born in Cincinnati, Ohio abt 1913, Grandfather was Ferd Carl Hassen, born abt 1875, Greatgrandfather was William Hassen. However, oral history has it that the name was changed from van (von) Hassenplug (or some variation) to Hassen to sound less German during either WWI or WWII. Anyone familiar with this?
