I am not researching this family but thought someone could use this info - it is from pages 256-259 of Volume I of the 1886 book "The History of the Susquehanna & Juniata Valleys" (The War for the Union section) and concerns at great length the military record and life of Captain George H. Hassenplug.Genealogical exerpts only follow:
Capt. George H. Hassenplug was born in Mifflinburg, Union County, Pa., October 25, 1832 and died at Hampton, Va., February 5, 1886.His remains were interred at Mifflinburg......For his first wife he married Miss Sue Kleckner on the 21st day of October, 1858.She was born January 28, 1839, and died December 30, 1859, leaving one son, who died in infancy.On the 25th day of April, 1867, he was again married, his choice being Miss Esther Slough, of Freeport, Ill., daughter of Benjamin and Esther (Smith) Slough.She was born in Lycoming County, Pa., and is of Revolutionary stock and of a soldier family.Both of her great-grandfathers served in the revolutionary War, her father in the War of 1812, and 2 brothers in the Civil War of 1861, and in the Union Army.
John Henry Hassenplug, the captain's grandfather, came from Holsborg, Germany, where he was born January 20, 1756.He married Miss Maria Eve Seebold, of Lebanon County, who bore him 9 sons and 5 daughters. He died in West Buffalo township November 30, 1829.His wife was born July 19, 1769, and died August 11, 1852.Of his sons, William, the captain's father, was born December 13, 1795, and married, on the 20th day of May, 1818, Miss Susannah Holtzman, who was born September 17, 1798.Their children are as follows:Charles, William H., Thomas, John Jesse, Jacob H., Charles H., George H., Catherine E., Elizabeth, Susanna and John M., who was killed while fighting for his country in the War of the Rebellion."
