John Hastings 4/03/99
I am searching for my ancestor who came from Ireland.
My ancestor, Peter Hastings, and his wife Jane came over from Ireland
and landed in Philadelphia sometime between 1791 when a child Mary was born
in Ireland,
and 1801 when a child was born in Kentucky. "Bringing in the Sheaves" by
William
I. Fee relates a story about him being a methodist preacher. When he got
on the
boat, he found all "most of the steerage passengers were Irish
Papists..full
of the spirit of persecution." They tried to throw him overboard. He
preached
anyway and "converted most of them, including the ship's crew except for
the
first mate." When they landed in Philedelphia the captain had a public
reception and Peter Hastings was invited and "presented to the
distinguished
gentlemen."he went by way of Ky. to Clermont County, Ohio, where he
performed a lot of marriages.
