Wm. P. Hatfield who died in Kern County, CA. was my Father. His Father, Joe D. Hatfield was the elected sheriff of Logan Co, W.Virginia from about 1928-1932.
The census recordsfor 1910 does give Joe D. hatfield's occupation as "Sheriff" when he was living in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. I am not sure if he was a deputy or the elected sheriff in 1910. I am more inclined he may have been a deputy sheriff.
Joe D. Hatfield was one of the first sheriffs in West Virginia to have his deputies wear standardize uniforms and receive training as law enforcement officers. It used to be pin a badge on and go out and enforce the law prior to his election.
