Hey Neddie, That's a tough question to answer since tying him in with the other Hattaway's has proven to be difficult. I do know that most Hattaway's are an English, Irish, Scottish mix (depending on which Hattaway that you're talking about). For instance, if you have the May family in your lineage, you have a Scottish heritage besides the English heritage from the Hattaway's.
Even with the Hattaway's, it's a little difficult to tell where exactly we came from. In all the research that I've done, I've never found where we crossed "the pond". I've never seen anything from other researchers that conclusively traces us back to England or Ireland or Scotland. The closest that I've found is that we are descendants of the Hathaway's who settled in Virginia. If this is the case, then we are of English descent.
As for James Baton, I do know that according to family legend his first wife, Ada, was Creek Indian and he stole her off the reservation. Her tombstone says it as well but proving it may be a little more difficult without DNA testing.
