John George Hatz 1755 Pa.

By genealogy.com user December 05, 1999 at 06:38:39

George Hatz died at West Hanover twp., Dauphin Co., Pa., a few days before 20 March 1816, when his will was proven.( Hatz was pronounced with a long, soft"a", as in father; not the hard "a" in hat. It was also written Hatts, Hats, Hotz and Hots.) George's will mentions three children; Catharine, married to Jacob Garverich ; Sammuel, "my oldest son"( born 17 Jan 1800; married Mary Brightbill about 9 August 1824; and perhaps died by 19 April 1842, Dauphin Co.); and John "...until my youngest comes to the age of 21".John is seen in the records as Hatz and Hotz, and about 1870-1880 the surname morphed into Hartz.John, born 16 Oct 1801, West Hanover twp., married Catharine Hershey ( 20 April 1807 - 28 Nov 1874) 18 August 1825; and he died 30 Dec 1882. They are buried at Gravel Hill Cemetery, just North of Palmyra. We have a good deal of info on John and Catharine, and their eleven children, and descendants.

George Hatz was apparently the son of George Hatz Sr, who may have been born 1740 at Manheim, Lancaster Co., died 22 August 1822, and is buried at St. Peter's Lutheran Church graveyard, Middletown, Dauphin Co., Pa.; who in turn may have been the son of John George Hats, born about 1700, immigrated from the Palatine 9 Nov 1738 at Philadelphia aboard the "Charming Nancy", and died shortly before 30 August 1755, when his will was proven at Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.

Although we do have a number of documents relating to these three, we still consider the line tentative, or assumed, requiring further proffs.
