Haupt to Haubt to Haub
Haupt - Haubt - Haub
I have just come to the realization (July 2009) of another Haupt surname derivation that occured somewhere back in time in Germany. It is now quite obvious to me that those with the Haub surname are in fact descendants of those with the Haupt surname.Today in Germany there are only 5% to 10% the number of individuals with the Haub name as there are Haupt.Haub families in Germany seem to be concentrated in the valleys of the Main and Rhein Rivers. The Haupt spelling is the oldest of the two dating back at least 900 years or so in Pappenheim, Franconia, Bavaria.
I have known for a while that the "b" and the "p" (phonetically) in German are interchangeable. In fact, my own ancestors ships records show Haubt spelling of Haupt. Why this has not dawned on me earlier, will simply remain a mystery.Several with the Haub spelling settled in the State of Indiana.I guess I simply assumed this was a derivation of earlier Haupt arrivals in the US and then just recently began looking in Germany for Haub spellings.
Haub now joins the list for Haupt derivations in Germany along with Hopt, Haupter, and Haubin. In France and Belgium, I have found Houpe which also derived independantly from Haupt in the State of North Carolina.
