Haub Families in the United States
Haub is a spelling derivation of the old German name Haupt. In some locations of Germany Haubt and Haupt are interchangeable because of the German "b" and "p" sounds are virtually identical. Those with the Haub spelling have simply dropped the "t" on the end - at some point in time - likely prior to the 1700's. In fact, many of the colonial American ships lists have Haupt immigrants with the Haubt spelling. This spelling change seems to be more concentrated in the middle Rhein River Valley area of Germany. The Haub families in America today arrived with the Haub spelling. Their distant ancestry however is Haupt.
The Haub families in the United States seem to have all immigrated during the mid 1800's and all seem to have been from the area of Nieder-Weisel in the larger region of Hesse-Darmstadt with a focus in the district of Wetteraukreis and where the Ruhr River meets the Rhein River. This area too has been occupied by Haupt families since at least the early 1500's.
The origin of the Haupt families seems to be Pappenheim, Middle Franconia - which is now in northwestern Bavaria. The first Lord of Pappenheim was Heinrich Haupt in the year 1130. This was a hereditary Lordship and in 1334, this hereditary Lordship became a hereditary Marshalship (Generalship) as well. The Lords of Pappenheim were able to document their family history for the Holy Roman Emperor, Ludwig the Bavarian going back to a particular point in the history of the Holy Roman Empire (i.e.1080's) and the fact that this line had produced some key military figures that supported the causes of the Holy Roman Empire. Because of this, they were granted the hereditary generalship of the HRE. Past down father to son, high military positions comparible to todays generals were what the Haupts of Pappenheim had in their future. Some however would assume other government positions in various civic and ministerial roles. As a result, the Haupt name migrated out of Pappenheim over the centuries to all parts of Germany and German speaking lands.
Here is what I know of the Haub families in the America. There is a high concentration of Haub families in Indiana, Iowa and California. My main focus over many years has been the Haupt families in the US and the more obvious spelling derivations that have occured in the United States. I have just recently broadened my research to involve the spelling derivations that occured in Germany - prior to their arrival in the United States.
