Barbara Hauer Fritchie; d. 1862, Frederick Co., MD
I am not researching this family, just enterin information from a 1993 newspaper article before I throw it away. This was written by Calvin Schildknecht for the Frederick News-Post:
"The father of Barbara Fritchie (of the Whittier poem) was John Nicholas Hauer (1733-1799) who emigrated in 1754 from Diedendorf, northern Alsace.Nicholas' father was Otto Hauer, son of Peter Hauer and wife Catherine (Guth). The early Lutheran Church at Lancaster, PA, records that the fourth cild of John Nicholas and wife Catherine was Barbara, born Dec. 3, 1766.The family moved to Frederick where Barbara was confirmed in the Reformed Curch.Barbara married much older John Casper Fritchie (c. 1780-1849). (I don't understand these dates, must be an error, or else her birthdate is, however, she was said to have been 'old' when the flag incident took place).Barbara Fritchie died on Dec. 18, 1862 according to her monument in Mt. Olivet Cemetery."
The house (a reconstruction, I believe) where the flag incident took place, is open to the public.
