Hi, Brad: It is "late in the game", but if you are up to it, I submit the following: John Roland Hawpe Jr. was my lifelong friend and buddy. We graduated from Daggett Jr. High School/Fort Worth, in 1940, then went on to Paschal HS,thence to the military, Hawpe and another best friend,Richard Lesley Martin, to the Air Force, and me, later, to the army. Martin was downed, then killedby civilians in Germany, Hawpe was downed and captured and was a POW for some time. He had a younger brother, Royce, who was also downed and was a POW, and liberated with John. Both Hawpe boys died several years ago. Now another Hawpe surfaces, Bradley Bonte Hawpe, who is an outfielder for the Colorado Rockies. I am not sure if this is John's son or grandson, but the Bonte is from Wilma Bonte, John's wife, and also in the Class of 1940, referenced above. I also remember that John Sr operated a retail feed store on Hemphill Street, FW., and that the family lived on Capps Street. I have a group picture of the Class of 1940 that I am sending to Brad's team address. This is a lot to digest, but since you appear to know so much about this family, I felt free to impose on you. Louie F. Turner.
