Hi Cameron,
I found the books in my Dad's belongings. My Dad's name was Rev. J(ohn) Gordon Allen. He was a minister in the United Methodist Church in Massachussetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. In addition to being a minister, he also collected books from estate sales and flea markets. So I have no idea how he acquired the books. But I just found these two in a box with some other religious books of my Dad's.
The books are:
1. Discipline 1892: The Doctrines and Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Appears to be leather bound with the binding falling apart (and missing at the binding edge). Signed on an inside page, looks like: Wm Bramwell Heath (last name could be another name, but Heath seems to fit the writing best).
2. Discipline 1908: Wm B Heath (possibly Heart or Hearth, but looks more like Heath). The Doctrines and Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church 1908.Hardbound.
The archivist said the name looks like Heath and she found the one entry in the archives, but could not say if it was the same person.
According to the Archivist, Disciplines were possessed not only by ministers but by others as well (I forget the term she used, but perhaps elder, deacons, something along those lines).
