Following is a summary of a War of 1812 pension file I just copied for Jahial Helton, born probably in South Carolina, later resident of Pickens County, Georgia, died after March 1871. Jahial is not in my direct line but I thought this might be of interest to others.
* Pension declaration: dated March 31, 1871. Jahial is 75 years old, resident of District 1098, Pickens County, GA. He married his wife, Rachel Akins, December 17, 1836, in Shoemake Creek, GA. He claims that he volunteered in the South Carolina Militia in the company of Capt. Douglas, General Blaine's brigade, at Lancaster Court House, South Carolina, about September 1, 1814, and was honorably discharged at Hadley's Point, SC, around March 1, 1815, and that he was stationed at the Fort at Hadley's Point near Charleston, SC, until peace was declared December 1814 and after that time. He now lives in Jasper, Pickens County, GA.Jahial signed with an actual signature, not his mark.
* Form from the Third Auditor's Office of the Treasury Department dated September 13, 1871, stating that Jahial Helton is not found on the rolls of Capt. Douglas's Company, SC Militia.
*Brief of claim form indicating that Jahial's claim was rejected on March 11, 1872, due to lack of proof of service. Form also notes that claim for bounty land is on suspended files.
Just for fun, and because I like the name Jahial, I looked up this poor gentleman in the census (Murray County, GA, in 1850, 1860, and 1870) and found this info on his family (birth dates approximated from census records):
Jahial, b. 1802 in SC
Rachel, b. 1811 in NC
Elizabeth, b. 1837 in GA (no longer in household in 1860)
Nancy, b. 1839 in GA (no longer in household in 1860)
John, b. 1841 in GA (no longer in household in 1860)
George W., b. 1843 in GA (left household by 1870)
Joel, b. 1844 in GA (twin, left household by 1870)
Joseph, b. 1844 in GA (twin, left household by 1870)
Jehial McDonald, b. 1846 in GA (left household by 1870)
Caroline, b. 1848 in GA (age calculated per 1860 census, although she is not found in 1850 census nor 1870)
Milly A., b. 1854 in GA (left household by 1870)
In the 1870 census, Jahial and Rachel's household includes a John Couch, age 11, b. GA.Not sure exactly how or if he is related.
