I am descended from Jacob & Elizabeth (nee HORNLEA)HELWIG of Germany.I have confirmed the existence of two sons: Johannes HELWIG, born 20 Dec., 1820 Hesse Cassel, Immigrated 1850 with wifeElizabeth (?) & daughter Dorothy 1850 to Hazleton, PA; Simon HELWIG born 1834 Bassaruda, Hesse Cassel, Immigrated 1860 to Hazleton, PA, died 1883 Hazleton, PA; and daughter Gertrude who married ? BRILL and also resided in Hazleton, PA.I feel there are probably other siblings that stayed in Germany, and/or possibly immigrated later.
In my research I have found the name HELWIG of this region to be like Smith & Jones in the US.This region in the mid 1800's was the 3rd largest poppulated in what is now present-day Germany. Also it is necessary to view old maps to find many of the town names we've uncovered because of all the lignite (coal) mining in this region.Towns simple caved in and were either abandoned and/or eventually built over top of old destroyed towns and renamed after the new adventurous settlers.
I too feel that most of us are likely related (repeated Christian names, occupations, etc.), but because of WWII bombing it may be difficult to prove.
