Robin,
As Bob stated, your Ewell was Martin Ewell Hembree, b. 4/8/1855. His birth is recorded in the Knox Co., Ky. Vital Statistics kept during the mid-1850s per Ky. law. I show his daughter Martha as Martha E. Hembree. Ewell was married at least twice. I think Florence was the mother of Martha. He also married Laura Marsee on 26 June 1903. I have not tracked his descendants.
Ewell was born out of wedlock to Sally Ann Hembree. As Bob noted, Sally Ann married afterwards Amaziah Curtis and had a son named James Curtis.
Ewell is documented in a civil suit involving the distribution of his grandfather Ezekiel Hembree Sr.'s land.Several of Ezekiel's children filed suit against their mother and other siblings. It was a rather involved case.
Ezekiel's children are very well documented in Knox Co. records. All of his 13 children are listed in his family bible and the suit and deeds and divisions of land identify everyone.
Ewell's mother Sally Ann was born 2/9/1829 and d. 10/1/1863. She is buried in the Burch-Alford Cemetery on Brush Creek near Trosper.
Sally Ann's parents were Ezekiel Hembree Sr. and his wife Phoebe aka Phebe Goodin. Phebe was the daughter of John Goodin Sr. and Sarah Arthur.
Ezekiel Hembree Sr. was the son of John Hembree Sr. and his wife Mary Laws.
Sally Ann was likely named by her mother Phebe after her own mother Sarah (Arthur) Goodin who was a daughter of Col. Thomas Arthur Sr. and his wife Sarah Arthur. The Arthurs are a noted family of Bedford Co., Va., and Knox Co., Ky.
John Goodin Sr. was the son of Thomas Goodin Sr. of Greene Co., Tenn. and later Knox Co., Ky. John is a documented soldier of the War of 1812 serving under Ambrose Arthur, his brother-in-law.
Thomas Goodin Sr. was the son of Benjamin Goodin Sr. and his wife Hannah Urquhart of Baltimore Co., MD.
