Mr. Nels C. Hendrickson’s obituary. 2 June 1910, Portland Republican Portland, North Dakota.
Words are inadequate to express our sorrow in being called upon to chronicle the death of one of Portland’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, Mr. Nels C. Hendrickson, who passed from this veil of tears to the great beyond at his home here Friday afternoon, May 27th at the advanced age of 64 years from cancer of the stomach.
Deceased was born in Kohbervig, Norway September 19, 1846. He was united in marriage to Miss Ane Severson May 27 1870. His death marked the fortieth anniversary of his marriage. Nine children blessed this union eight of which are living. Eight were born in Norway and one in America, where they came in the spring of 1887. With the exception of two years since coming to America he has been a resident of Portland.
He was a member of the Mission Church and was true to his calling, always lending a helping hand to those in need and holding firm to his belief in him who doeth all things well. He was a patient sufferer for seven weeks although ailing about a year, and seemed resigned to the inevitable. He was a kind father and affectionate husband and administered to the needs of his household according to the teachings of the good book.
He leaves to mourn his early demise a loving wife, eight children. Christopher, of Adams, N.D.; Mrs. Robt. Colvin, of Starkweather, N.D.; Henry, of Enderby, B.C.; Severt, of Chicago; Hjelmar, Mrs. D.E. Rogers, and Sarah, and an adopted son, Marcus, of Portland, besides a wide circle of warm friends.
The funeral services were held from the Cong. Church Monday conducted by Rev. Ingebretson and R. L. Colvin, after which the remains were laid to rest in the United cemetery near town, to wait the call of the creator.
The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family in this their hour of deep sorrow.
