Re: Thomas and Dorothy (Preston) Henry of PA-1750's
Hi Gavin...Your Rachel (1785-1864) is a sister of my ggggrandma Elizabeth Henry (1783-1861).Their great uncle, William Henry sr. (1729-1786), is the senior famous gunsmith and armorer to Generals Braddock and Forbes...inventor of the screw auger and the very first steam boat (not Fulton or Fitch!).He was best friends with the great artist Benjamin West...who painted both William and Ann Henry...that now hangs in the Philadelphia Art Museum. There is a lot of info online about the famous Henrys of Nazareth, PA.Look under Jacobsburg Historical Society.
William Henry sr.(gunsmith) was brother to Robert Henry (1730-?), our ggggggrandpa. Wm sr. had 13 children: William jr.(gunsmith), John Joseph (gunsmith), George, Abraham(child died), Elizabeth(infant died), Elizabeth, Mary, Abraham, James, Andrew, Matthew, Nathaniel, and Benjamin West. Most all the Henry men were involved in the gun factory during the Revolution..."armorers of George Washington and the Revolution".The Henry Rifle is quite famous...also known as the PA Rifle and the Kentucky Rifle.
Little is known of Robert...just of his son Thomas (1755-1820) who married Dorothy Preston.Email me for more info and photos on the Henrys.
