Jim,
I contacted Stef and am just going to paste his reply below.another thing that you may consider, if you know when, where your family came from, the Dutch have very good records of people who left and their intended destination by year, so you may want to contact the archives at the Province from which they departed.I've come up with the same problem with the van der Heijden name as Stef has with his surname. It seems that everyone in the North Brabant chose that for their surname. There are thousands of them there. Stef's reply:If anything catches your eye, let me know.
Jean

Hallo Jean , I have a family three from the Hermsens but there is no one who went to America.
It is very difficult to find Hermsens who are family from each other. The cause is that in the time before 1750 the people have
no surnames I can show you by my family threein a strait line I am Stef Hermsen, my father was Petrus Hermsen, his father
Petrus Hermsen (1859), Johannes Hermsen (1824), Hermanus Hermsen(1792), Johannes Hermsen (1752), His father was
Richardus Hermense,(1726) His father was Hermen Gijsberts ( 1691) and he was a son of Gijsbert van Stralen (1661). You
can see that Richardus born in 1726 was cold Hermsen, it means that he was a son of Hermen, . So there are everywhere
Hermsens who are not family from each other.
It is still cold in Holland last Saturday night we have a lot of snow it seams Christmasevening
kind regards, Stef
