My mother, was a daughter of Ellen Hession.My grandmother, Ellen Hession, was the daughter of Catherine and John Hession.John Hession was from Tuam.They were engaged in sheep farming in the Galway area.Some of our cousins, now deceased, lived recently in Tuam, and had the victualer shop on High Street, just down from the highcross dedicated to Bishop O'Hession and King Turlock O'Conor.The highcross was erected in about 1100.That cross has been moved a few short years ago to St. Mary's Church, located at the bottom of High Street.The victualer shop has been sold and my close kin there have relocated to other parts of Ireland.One is in England, and another is now in Australia.I still have one Hession cousin, aged 93, living in this country.A few years ago, there was another cousin, a Catholic nun, stationed in Elizabeth, NJ, but she has passed away.I remember my Hession cousins, both here and in Ireland.My generation have become well educated and hold down fine jobs.They are musically inclined, some gifted with such talent.My grandmother's mother was Catherine Gogarty, from Co. Down.My GGrandfather, John, was a wonderful man, hard working, yet full of fun and ready at any time for a jig or reel.They preserved much of the language traditions.In addition to my grandmother, their children, later called Heshion, because of U.S. immigration changes in the spelling of the name, were Mary Margaret (never married), Tom, John, Jim.The Heshions established themselves in Kansas, California and N.J. in the U.S.My wife and I live in NY, surrounded by children and grandchildren, and have the opportunity to travel to Ireland from here.There is a well known pop female singer in Ireland by the last name of Hession who is a distant cousin.Some of you may recognize her name.There are still Hessions living around the Tuam area, as well as in other parts of Ireland.Over and out.
