Paris, Tex Aug. 24.—Mrs. D.P.Hickman was cruelly murdered at her home in the Union academy neighborhood, seventeen miles southwest of this city, about 9 o’clock Saturday night. The authorities here were notified yesterday morning and Sheriff Gunn and Justice Rant went down to investigate. The story of the killing brought out at the inquest is as follows.
Willie Childs, a neighbor of D.P. Hickman went to his house about 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon and after remaining there about an hour he and Hickman left, taking Johnny, the 8-year-old son of Hickman with them. About sundown Hickman and his little boy returned home, both drunk and went to bed.A little while later Willie Childs and Stanley Rodgers came to Hickman’s house with a bottle of whisky. Rodgers went in the house and Childs stood in the door. Mrs. Hickman was putting her children to bed. When Childs and Rodgers came to the house Childs had a shotgun. It made her very angry and she began to upbraid them and said that she wished the man who gave her child whisky was at the devil. Childs stepped Inside the house, said he was the man and began cursing and abusing her, applying foul epithets to her and calling her a liar.
Mrs Hickman ordered them off the place, and they went out in the yard and got on the fence and kept talking and cursing. She went out and insisted upon their going, but they refused to go and kept on cursing and taunting her. Picking up an ax she started toward them and struck the fence, telling them she would hurt them it they did not leave. Finally she started toward them with the ax uplifted. when one of the men fired. The woman staggered back to the house and sank on the steps, exclaiming:
“Lord have mercy, I am shot”
Both men thou jumped over the fence and ran away, one of them shouting back:
“If you don’t mind some of you will get the same play.”
Several persons were present, and the unfortunate woman was carried in the house. She lived about two hours. The gun was charged with bird shot, sixty of which were taken out of her body. Tbe heavy hickory handle of the ax which she held in her hand was almost torn in two by the charge before it entered the woman’s body. Nothing has been seen of either of the men since the shooting. The two men are described as follows: Willie Childs, about 26 years old, but does not appear over 23 or 24, 5 feet 10 incheshigh, red complexion, dark hair, will weigh about 150 pounds blue eyes inclined to be pop eyed. Stanley Rodgers, about 19 yearsold, light complexion, sandy hair, talks slow and easy, weighs about 130 pounds, about 5 feet 10 inches high.
