Hi, Carla! Your surname is originally a Kentish one. It probably means brother in law/near male relative of Hick or Hitch (a baby form of Richard).
We can trace it back to the mid 15th C, although direct lines only go to the mid 16th so far. Wills may reveal further relationships.
You need to start with yourself and work backwards, filling in all relevant information (birth, marriage death, number and names of children, movements from town to town etc) until you arrive at the ancestor who emigrated from England.
In all likelihood, you are going to arriveat a Kent or Sussex birthplace. If and when you do, list the information on the Facebook page Dive Family and Descendants (https://www.facebook.com/groups/117296295206/?fref=ts) because the Dives descend from a Judith Hickmott.someone there should be able to help you further. There are a numberof Hickmott sites around the net and all descend from families in a few Kent villages. All the best.
