Tradition says that three Higginbotham brothers coming to what is now Amherst Co. VA abt 1735, John, Thomas, and Joseph. According to the testimony of a granddaughter of John, Tirzah H. London, these Higginbothams emigrated from Ireland.
John came to Virginia about 1735 and contracted for land on Rutledge Creek (2,430 acres). He died prior to 1745 and the land he had contracted for was conveyed to his oldest, Moses, in April 1745. Moses partitioned this land in 1751 among his brothers and sister probably after the death of his mother, (Frances Riley?), who was not mentioned in this partition as receiving any dower.
Tradition has it that John came from Ireland to VA early in the 18th century with 5 children, John, Moses, Aaron, James and Anne and that four others were born in VA, Benjamin, Joseph, Rachel and Thomas.

VA Mag reports that the ancestry Of John as presented here is strengthened by the finding Of an old book dated 1662 with the signature Of a Nicholas
Higginbotham in the flyleaf found in an old trunk belonging to Col. James Higginbotham, son of John and Frances. p. 505 Shows John Higginbotham from Ireland was living in Virginia as early as 1751 m. to Frances Riley.
Tradition has it that John came to Virginia in the winter
and died in the spring, "having taken cold prospecting government lands."

Lt. Col. John Higginbotham is thought to be the John "Hickenbottom/Higginbotham",who sailed on the good ship BONAVENTURE from London to Virginia in 1634. Much trade was going on between the colonies of England and Barbados in those days. The principle trades were slaves, rum, molasses, and sugar. Many Virginia colonists had plantations or holdings in both Virginia and Barbados. He took the oath of allegiance to the British Crown and became a soldier, he was styled a Lt. Colonel in 1666. His will was probated in the Parish of St. Philip, Island of Barbados, 11-27-1673.

THE HIGGINBOTHAM FAMILY OF TAZEWELL COUNTY
Moses Higginbotham, who came from Amherst County, Virginia, is the progenitor of the Tazewell County branch of the family. It is understood that he was a hatter near Liberty Hill, in that part of Tazewell County which was, at that time, embraced in Russell County. He selected for his home a spot where squirrels were plentiful. The old homeplace where he resided at the time of his death and where his widow lived, is located on the south side of Paint Lick Mountain within a half mile west of Liberty Hill, or Knob, as it was later called. Most of the Higginbothams were born in and near this little village. Liberty Hill is about eight miles west of Tazewell Courthouse and was formerly a prominent business and social center.
There was also a Robert Higginbotham who appears to have been living near the home of Moses Higginbotham. From Tazewell court records we find that he bought a tract of land on the waters of Maiden Spring, April 14, 1802. On August 23, 1814, Robert Higginbotham and Nancy his wife conveyed a tract of land to David Young. On November 23, 1823, Robert Higginbotham of Madison County, Alabama, made a deed to George Higginbotham of Tazewell County for land lying between Paint Link and Deskins Mountains. It is not known who this Robert Higginbotham was, but it is surmised that he was a brother of Moses , and that the two came together and settled in Southwest Virginia. Robert Higginbotham served on the second grand jury in Tazewell March 3, 1801--Vol. 1, Annals of Tazewell. He appears listed as a soldier in the Revolution, in Battle of Kings Mountain.
From Marriage Register No. 1, of Tazewell County, we find the marriage of Fannie Higginbotham to William Garrison in 1801, and of Mary
Higginbotham to Henry Boling in 1809. We surmise that the Fannie and Mary Higginbotham were daughters of Robert; or they may have been sisters of Moses.
Moses died November, 1826, at his old home place and was buried in the old family graveyard, afterwards known as the "Granny Higginbotham Graveyard." His widow Elizabeth survived him about nineteen years.
There were eleven children born to this union, eight sons and three daughters; namely, William K., Moses, James, Joseph, George, Aaron, Charles, Thomas, Rachel Francis (Mrs.Balaam Bowling), and Jane, who married Samuel Sayers. Of the eight sons, only three lived and died in Tazewell County; William K., James G., and Joseph; and of three
daughters, only one, Fannie Bowling, lived and died in Tazewell County. The others lived
in Tazewell for a time and then moved away, going west. Several settled in Kentucky. We believe they left Tazewell at different times between 1830 and 1850. They are found to have scattered through West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas, Utah,

Washington and other states. A good many are still found in Amherst County, and in and about Richmond.

Moses Jr., George, Aaron, Jane and Rachel went west. It is said Aaron went to Illinois and Jane to Missouri. It is said Charles went to Kentucky about 1840.

Letter from Pennsylvania Gazette of 12-08-1763 from Captain William Christian, dating 10-19-1763.
"Being joined by Captain Hickenbotham, with 25 of the Amherst militia, we marched on Tuesday last to Winston's Meadows, where our scouts informed us, that they had discovered a party of Indians and about three miles off. Night coming on, prevented our meeting them; and next day, being rainy, made it difficult to follow their tracks. As they were on their return, Captain

Hickenbotham marched to join captain Ingles down New River, etc." The letter does not state which Higgenbotham he is referring to. There were six brothers in Amherst Co in 1863.

cemetery is a lone monument erected to the memory of Thomas HIGGINBOTHAM B 6/10/1769, D 2/4/1835. There are many other graves in this cemetery marked with flint rock headstones. The old abandoned residence of John Jr. stands about 600 feet easterly from this cemetery. John HIGGINBOTHAM and Frances RILEY may be buried in this cemetery, as well as Moses HIGGINBOTHAM and his wife Frances.

Eventually, Hickenbottem was the spelling. There are documents which support this fact.
