Hildreth marriage? Divorce? Second marriage?...HELP! (Jackson County, MI)

By Paul Briggs March 29, 2005 at 10:21:55

I recently came across a marriage index for Jackson County which included the marriage of my gggrandparents, Linden & Caroline (Fox) HILDRETH. The index showed the following:

HILDRETH, Linden A./ Fox, Caroline J. ; Jackson, 1 Sept 1844/ 2 Sept 1866.

There is no question that Lindren and Caroline (Fox) HILDRETH were married on 1 Sept 1844 as I have the original marriage record in my files. I have no idea, however, what the second date shown in this record (2 Sept 1866) refers to. Is there anybody out there who has an idea what this second date signifies?

Family legend has it that Linden deserted Caroline and his family circa 1850 to join the California Gold Rush, so I am wondering if this second date might refer to a second marriage between Linden and Caroline when he came slinking back to Michigan and she took the cad back?.... perhaps a divorce?.... or maybe a legal presumption of death after Linden remained gone after a certian period of time? Anybody have any ideas what this means or has anyone else come across two dates like this?

Just for info....Caroline and her children by Linden are listed on both the 1860 and 1870 (she d. Oct, 1879) censuses for Buchanan, Berrien County, MI. She is the "head of household" (no husband listed) on both of them.

Appreciate the help as the significance of this second date is driving me nuts....
Paul
