John Hillyard, Kent Co., Delaware
I am back with a cup of coffee. I found this information
in "THE MARYLAND AND DELAWARE GENEALOGIST", VOL. XVII, NO.4,
FALL, 1986(OCT., NOV.,DEC.). Credits, I assume should also
go to "THE EARLY SETTLEMENT AND FOUNDING OF KENT. CO., DELA.
1671-1683, COPYRIGHT, JAMES B. JACKSON, 1983, PUBLISHED BY
THE KENT CO., DELAWARE, TRICENTENNIAL COMMISSION. OK,"A
dispute in 1678 involved two men who were destined to become
leaders in the new county to be.The deposition of John
Hillyard to Governor Sir Edmond Andros tells of his troubles
after he arrived and unknowlingly built a house on land
already patented to Francis Whitwell.""Hillyard relates
how, after selling his "land and cattill," he came,
apparently from southern Maryland, with three of his family,
"in a verrey small boat through the mane sea to the Whorekill."He was granted a warrant for 800 acres, went to Duck Creek and, because of a misunderstanding about his
survey, built his house on Whitwell's "Whitehall" tract
which was not occupied at that time.He returned to Marylnad to obtain "providgion and other nessessareyse" and
brought back his whole family of "eleven soules".The prob-
lem was ultimately straightened out when Hillyard bought
"Whitehall" from Whitwell and was also granted two other
tracts totalling 800 acrtes nearby". (Anybody who knows
of this family please post your info.)If he came from
southern Maryland, he is probably a Hilleary. Jeannette
