There was a Robert Hilliard born Oct 1866 living in Orillia.
1911 / Ontario / Simcoe East / 38 Orillia / page 1

There was also a female Mernie Hilliard age 25 as an inmate
1911 / Ontario / Simcoe East / 13 Orillia / page 12

Another good place to look is city directories. See how far back you can trace your grandfather in one location. Try the main Barrie or Orillia library. If they don't have copies then the Toronto Reference library should have them.

Get a copy of his death certificate. I started with my grandfathers death certificate. It gave his age, I went to Archives Ontario and searched for his birth record, which gave me his parents names. I then located them in census and found their marriage record.

The little information you gave is not enough to make any kind of connection. Dates are important. You would know how old he was when he died, so even if you don't know his birthdate, you can calculate the approximate year of birth.

If you said looking for Gene Hilliard born approx 1925 or whatever year, then it might be easier to get a response. Also was his name Gene or Eugene? Certificates are important as they give full names. eg Eugene John Hilliard (just an example, but makes searching easier).
