Obituary

Joseph B. Hilliard

Joseph "Joe" B. Hilliard, 84, of Anderson, S.C., died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Hospice House.
He was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Oct. 15, 1917, to the late Joseph B. Hilliard Sr. and the late Nora Stephens Hilliard. He was employed for many years as a sales representative for various furniture manufacturers and was named No. 1 among new salesman for the Spring Air Company in 1957 and was named Outstanding Furniture Manufacturer Representative by the Southern Home Furnishings Association in 1973. At the time of his retirement in 1990, he was the sales representative for Florida Furniture Industries, which had named an entire set of furniture, the Hilliard Collection, in his honor.
Mr. Hilliard was a member of Co. E 38th Combat Engineers in World War II, having served on Ascension Island and in North Africa. Upon his discharge from the service, he had attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the American Campaign Ribbon, European/Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and four overseas service bars. He was a longtime member of the VFW. He was also a charter member of the Palmetto Sharpshooters Camp No. 1428, Sons of Confederate Veterans where he had served as paymaster. He had been a member of the SCV for 19 years at the time of his death. He was a patriotic American and proud of his Southern heritage. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church and the Latham Sunday School Class.

Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Hilliard, Rex Hilliard and Max Hilliard.
Survivors are his wife, Roxana Alexander Hilliard; son, Daniel Berger of Gastonia, N.C.; daughters, Roxy Thrasher of Anderson, S.C., and Kathy Berger of Walhalla, S.C.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Concord Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Marcaurelle officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Anderson, S.C. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

The family suggests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the Concord Baptist Church Building Fund, 1012 Concord Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
