John Hillyard/Martha Hillyard connection? 1827 Delaware
In researching my family's genealogy, I seem to have come up against a dead end, and I am hoping that someone out there might be able to help me. One of my ancestors is Martha Hillyard, born 1827 in Delaware, died in 1885 in Delaware, married Alexander Killen in 1848 in Delaware. Her father was a John Hillyard, who was also born in Delaware. It has always been rumored in my family that John was a descendant of Charles Hillyard III, the one who built the Woodburn mansion in Dover, DE. This Charles did have a son, John, who may have passed in 1805. It is also family lore that John Hillyard was the black sheep, so to speak, of the family. I know that this was an era that if you did something the patriarch didn't agree with, you could be literally erased from the family tree records kept in the family Bible.
If anyone can help me, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!
