Re: Joseph Hilpert in Belleville, Illinois
I do not have any information on your Joseph Hilpert in
my files.Ellis Island will have no information on him
either as Ellis Island was not opened as an immigration
depot until 1892.From 1855 to 1892, the Emigrant Land-
ing Depot for New York was at Castle Garden, located at
the southern end of Manhattan Island.I would suggest
the following:find the court record of his naturali-
zation as a U.S. citizen (should be in the county court
for the county in which he lived at the time).Find
the court record of his intention to become a U.S.
citizen (the county court for the county in which he
lived at the time he declared his intention.Find him
and his family on the U.S. Federal Census for 1900,1910,
and/or 1920. (The column "year arrived in U.S. may also
include the month of arrival.) Once you find the year and
month or arrival, check the incoming passenger lists for
the ships arriving in the U.S. (National Archives.)
Also, the newspaper obituary (if any) may be helpful.
I hope you find this posting helpful.
