I have a copy of a letter from my g,g,grandfather Richard Washington Hilton to his nephew, William Hilton in Wheeling, West Virginia. Richard is requesting information about his brother Henry Clay (John Henry) Hilton, who had just been murdered. Henry had been shot in the back by two men while leaving a bar in Wheeling. The copy of the letter is very poor. The letter dated: "Dec. 26th, 1880, to William Hilton." "Sir I received your dispatch the 22nd and was very sorry to hear the news you sent me and I'm sorry that I could not come out to see you all. But I want you to send me word what is the matter with him and whether he is dead or not and where he lives at and how many children has he first and last, as for my part I am not well myself all the rest is well as far as I know mother - is very ___ at this time. I have three children only and the oldest is 16 and my youngest is 11 years old - two boys and one girl. I have no news to write, only times is dull here at this time with I shall close for the ____. I want you to be sure to answer this as soon as you get this and tell me how he is if he is not dead. Write to me dead or alive. Direct your letter to Damascus, Montgomery County, Maryland. No more at present I remain your uncle." Signed "Richard W. Hilton". Richard must have written this letter when he was still living at his father-in-law's (Lark Shipley) place near Mullinix Mill, now owned by the Harold Mullinix family. It should be noted that a descendant of Henry Clay (John Henry) Hilton, who lives in Nevada, kindly sent me a copy of this letter. She visited Maryland some years ago and I took her to the old Lloyd Hilton homesite.
