There are numerous "trees" on Ancestry.com which give undocumented information about Nancy Hilton. This summary is typical:
Nancy Hilton, born 25 Dec 1760 in Smyth, Virginia, USA, died 26 Aug 1855 Smyth, Virginia, USA.She was the daughter of William Hilton and Sarah Bryant, married 14 Apr 1760 in Smyth, Virginia.
I am looking for the grain of truth in the above rundown.Where did the details come from? The exact dates would suggest that they came from a Bible record. There are some problems as it is stated.First, there was no USA until 1776.Second, Smyth County was not formed until 1832.If the marriage and the birth took place where Smyth County is now, they would have occurred in Augusta County, Virginia. The second problem is that I have not been able to find Nancy on the 1850 census. If she died in 1855, she should have been listed.
Various "trees" on Ancestry.com and on WorldConnect also list other children than the three that I know about.Where did those names come from?Obviously, almost all of the trees were simply cloned from other trees. But someone had to be the first to post the information, and the dates had to come from somewhere. The Smyth County locations are obviously just presumptions because the family lived there at one time.
If anyone knows a source for the dates or who first put them up, please contact email@example.com
