The 1881 census, however, has no Ernest with a birth year of 1865 +/- 5 born or even living in Wakefield. The closest are Mirfield & Clayton West and both are in the textile trade (including the Clayton West mite at 13yrs old!).

It's possible that your Ernest could have been employed in Wakefield before emigrating. If he was working in the railway industry there are two lines running through the town, one N/S & the other E/W; for all I know there might have been more then!

It would be worth checking for an Ernest in Wakefield on the '91 census (assuming he'd not emigrated by then).
