Have you checked the New England Historic & Genealogical Register?I have a note that says Volume 87, p. 332, has information on Joshua HINCKLEY [per HHH by E. Chas. HINCKLEY].

We can say with certainty that Phoebe HINCKLEY was not born in Tompkins Co., NY, because it didn't exist in 1805. :-) However, she was probably born in what in 1817 became Tompkins County.

USGenWeb > NY > Tompkins County, history of Ulysses, written in 1876, about settlers of 1805:An old orchard on Mr. Corey's land near the brickyard marks the site of the house where Joshua Hinckley lived...Hinckley lived where Blues Corners now are, and there were no buildings from Hinckley's to Bond's.

Hinckley Heritage & History by E. Chas. HINCKLEY: Joshua & brother Benjamin HINCKLEY were of Hector, now Schuyler Co., NY, 1795.Schuyler was created in 1854 from Tompkins, Steuben, & Chemung.However, HHH also has Lewis Chase HINKLEY (21 July 1794, Coymans, Albany, NY - 10 Feb. 1866, Irving Twp., Barry Co., MI).

Google "1930 census."Ancestry database shows no Joshua of Barnstable Co., MA, 1800; shows Joshua of Dutchess & Albany Cos., NY, 1800; & Dutchess & Seneca Cos., NY, 1810.Seneca was fromed from Cayuga Co., 1804.Tompkins County was formed in 1817 from Cayuga & Seneca, so your Joshua must have been the one of Seneca in 1810.

Joshua HINCKLEY [with son Lewis C.] was of Tompkins Co., NY, in 1820; & Joshua [with sons, Lewis C., & Horace] was there in 1830. There were three men named William SCHENCK there.Phoebe must have named her first child by Prelet TAFT for her first husband, who d. 22 Aug. 1835.

Silver Creek, Mills Co., IA, 1856: TAFT, Collen, 55, & Andrew B., 23.

Mills Co., IA, 1870, TAFT: Collin, 69; Prelet, 66, VT; William, 41 {b. 1841}; Nancy, 28; Marcus, 7; & Esther, 4.In 1870, Prelet was with dau. Abigail & her husband F. B. SPEES, Tabor P. O., Rawles Twp., Mills Co., IA.

USGenWeb > IA > Mills Co:F. {Frederick} B. SPEES, b. 3 May 1830, Chenango Co., NY, went to Oberlin, OH, at age twelve.On 22 Oct. 1854, he m. Maria MERRIFIELD, who d. 27 Nov. 1859; m2. 21 May 1862, Abigail TAFT, d/o Prelet & Phoebe.Abigail had dau. Lora G., & son Wm. F., who was accidentally killed 4 July 1879.

Rawls, Mills, IA, 1880, SPEES: Frederick, 50, NY NY NY; wf. Abigail, 41, OH VT OH {?}; dau. Lora, 11, IA NY OH.

In 1880, Prelet TAFT, 76, VT MA MA, cooper, & son W. S. {William Schenk}, 39, OH VT NY [mother b. NY], of Morey, Nye, NV; with Chinese cooks & laundrymen.

Douglas Co., CO, 1880, Christian SHAFERMEYER, 49; wf. Eliza, 43, OH VT NY [mother b. NY]; ch. Wm., 18; Mary, 17; Charles, 15; Minnie, 13; Susan, 11; Frederick, 8; Phoebe O., 6; Doris, 4; Mark, 1.

Castle Rock, Douglas Co., CO, 1900, Christian SCHAEFERMEYER, b. Sep. 1831, Germany; imm. 1854; m. 40 y.
wf. Eliza A., b. Je. 1836, OH VT NY, had 9 ch., 6 living; sons Wm. P., b. July 1861, MO; Mark D., July 1879, CO.

Of Joshua's family, I believe the only one living in 1880 to indicate where parents were born was Benjamin HINCKLEY, 69.He & wf. Mariah, 69, were of Bronson, Huron Co., OH, in 1880, they & parents all b. NY {!}

What do you think about where Phoebe was born?
