I agree....regarding the "c". I remember when I was in the Army they constantly tried to drop it. Well it is easy to do because it is actually silent. So my theory is that the correct way is with the "c". In my search of records, quite a number of times it was missing. Finally, I always check both spellings to be sure.

Do you think Hinckley, England has anything to do with us?

South Dakota is a very interesting state. I live on the coast of Connecticut in Milford, very near the action spots- both Bridgeport (about 15 miles) and Preston/Norwich (about 70 miles).

It is my belief- unconfirmed, that our William is the one married to Lucy and buried in the Hamilton Ave. Cemetery. None of their relatives, children etc.match with what we know so far...but that could change. If that is the case, then we may be directly related to the John Hinckley you have had exchanges with in the Forum.

As far as research is concerned, I don't know where I would have been without direct access to the Federal Census on my home computer. I was amazed at this. But it is still an involved process and you can't give up easy.
I still had to visit libraries, town clerk's offices etc. In fact some of the libraries still have the micro-fiche (sp?) readers which I had to learn how to operate.
